Cultural and Natural Heritage ofHaskovo-Evros

Region Haskovo
Haskovo is located in the southeastern part of Bulgaria’s South Central region. It comprises 261 towns and villages organized in 11 municipalities: Haskovo, Dimitrovgrad, Harmanli, Simeonovgrad, Svilengrad, Madzharovo, Ivaylovgrad, Lyubimets, Mineralnibani, Stambolovo and Topolovgrad, covering a total area of 5543 km².

The region of Haskovo boasts a rich and interesting cultural and historical heritage, including architectural and historical monuments from antiquity and the Middle Ages, valuable archeological finds, monuments from the National Revival Period (monasteries, old houses and churches), historical places and others.
Many megalithic structures have been registered in the area of Straja-Sakar Mountains and the Eastern Rhodopes and a big number of monumental stone Thracian tombs have been discovered in the area.

Haskovo District has favourable physico-geographic features - mild climate, beautiful pristine nature, rich flora and fauna with exceptionally high biodiversity, numerous natural landmarks.

The oldest traces of life discovered so far on the territory of modern Haskovo region date back to the New Stone Age (VII - V th century BC). That in itself speaks of the rich history, numerous cultural layers formed and their impact on everyday life and cultural life in the region.

In Haskovo region, besides good food traditions, there is a special attitude towards wine. The favorable climatic and geographic conditions contribute to the development of this traditional activity, whose roots date back to the Thracian age.

Haskovo region is famous for its wine-making tradition and the wine-making facilities on its territory are specialized in the production of high-quality wines, which are well established on the international market. The few wine centers on the territory of the region attract the supporters of the so-called "wine tourism".

Evros
Evros regional unit is one of the largest in Greece and is located at the northeast part of Greece at a particularly strategic point. Its natural beauties such as the Evros River Delta, the Forest of Dadia, Samothraki and important monuments of historical and archaeological interest, characterize Evros. There are wonderful beaches, modern tourist sites, and alternative forms of tourism. Findings of 5 thousand years indicate the continued presence of the Thracians on these lands. Evros inhabitants prove that tradition for them is a way of life.
Fertile land and the Evros River characterize the region, which create favorable living conditions. The livelihood of the region still holds the centuries-old traditions of silk production and fine crafts in Soufli.
